The 2009 South Norwood Arts Festival Grande Finale

As the Festival closes, Sunday sees highly celebrated local band The Positively Test Card headline for the second year. If you prefer to get involved then you can head up to The Cherry Trees for a jam session instead.

Before that in the afternoon we have the South Norwood Arts Fair. The Fair is now in its fourth year - it was from the Fair that the Portland Arts Festival and now the South Norwood Arts Festival have grown - and it goes from strength to strenght. This year it will be taking place on Woodside Green again. We held it on the Green for the first time last year and it proved so popular we have decided to risk the weather again! Even if it rains the fair will go ahead in a number of back-up indoor venues near to the Green - just come down on the day and we'll be there to direct you to the reserve venues.

There will be live music, dance and theatre at the fair and a plenty to eat and drink. It is also a great opportunity to browse and shop at numerous stalls from local businesses and independent traders. And if you entered the Photography competition make sure you are at the fair to find out if your's was one of the winning entries.

Positively Test Card

Dave Woodhead and The Positively Test Card

The Gold Coast, Portland Road. From 8:00 pm. FREE!!!

PPR are thrilled to announce that Dave Woodhead and the Positively Test Card will be playing the Portland Arts Festival again this year. There set of lively African music went down a storm at a packed Gold Coast last year so we have booked them into the same venue this time around.

Positively Test Card are real local heroes. Check out the picture of them under local landmark - Crystal Palace mast - or pick up a copy of their album The Indestructible Beat of South Norwood for proof of their local credentials!

The Positively Test Card play Kwela. Kwela -- South African penny-whistle jive -- must be the world’s happiest and most uplifting music. Orginally played on the street, kwela became the first black commercial music of apartheid-stricken South Africa. It had a brief heyday in the late 50's and early 60's, when thousands of Kwela 78's were made.

Dave has been in the Kwela game since 1995 and he has played with such luminaries as Billy Bragg and Robyn Hitchcock before forming his band The Positively Test Card. The band have played hundreds of gigs including an appearance at the Glastonbury festival a couple of years back.

Check out the Positively Test Card website to hear samples of their sounds and find out more about the band.

A jam session at the Cherry Trees

Piper at the Gates of Dawn

The Silhouette Theatre Company presents "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is a wonderful story from Kenneth Grahame's The Wind In The Willows. The Silhouette Theatre Company It tells of young Portly Otter who runs away from home after an argument with his parents and then gets lost in The Wild Wood. Rat and Mole join in the search for him, but will they find him before the Weasels do? And who is this strange Piper? Maybe he can help…

This enchanting tale remains very much in keeping with the original story and features some great new songs, puppets, comedy and special effects to bring to life one of the all time classics.
