Portland Road Community Garden

For many years, the raised flower beds outside the Health Centre in Enmore Road have been empty and unattractive. In March 2016, an agreement was signed between NHS Property Services and Croydon Council to allow PPR to take over the maintenance of the beds along Enmore Road.

A plan was drawn up and we began work with delivery of 20 bulk bags of soil to top up the beds. The delivery looked enormous and we had an experimental evening to find out the best way to spread the soil between the beds and arranged a ‘big dig’. Lots of local people turned up to help and the soil was spread between the beds on one Saturday morning in July.

We had been lucky to receive a donation for the garden from local councillors, which enabled us to purchase trees and shrubs. These were planted and included acers, ferns and a variety of shade-loving shrubs. Colour has been provided with some pansies and geraniums and 400 bulbs were planted in October to provide spring colour. We had also saved the poppy seeds from the Health Centre bed in Denmark Road and scattered these liberally; Health Centre colleagues supplied other seeds.

We are grateful to the Country Park Practice for supplying us with three silver birch trees.

Plans are now being drawn up to extend Portland Road Community Garden to the area outside the leisure centre. We plan to install seating under the mature trees, where a community noticeboard has already been installed.

We have created a list of local people interested in helping to maintain garden.  If you would like to get involved, please email us or phone 07982 444 773.
