News from People for Portland Road Summer 2006

Our aims for the Portland Road area

People for Portland Road is a group of residents, traders and concerned individuals working to conserve and enhance the local area, chaired by local councillor Paul Scott.  All of our activities are run by volunteers in their spare time.  Do you care about Portland Road?  We aim to improve its appearance, encourage community involvement and enhance the safety and accessibility of our environment.  If you would like to join us, please get in touch;

Demanding the Leisure facilities we deserve

We are shocked and disappointed by the decision of the new leadership of Croydon Council to cancel the plans for a new leisure centre at the heart of our community and to substitute the promised facilities with a ‘refurbishment’ of the existing building.  This drastic cancellation of the much needed brand new facility was made as a cost cutting measure with no consultation with the local community, where the planned investment is desperately needed.

Following our successful protest on the 24th June (pictured), we know that many people and traders feel the same way and there is a way to get our voices heard.

Sign the petition: available in many shops on Portland Road or email us for your copy:

Public meeting:  At the Stanley Halls on the 10th July at 7pm—come along and bring a neighbour.

Together we can make our voices heard!

World of Portland Road Community Fair

We are pleased to announce the inaugural PPR Community Fair on Saturday the 22nd of July in Oakley Road.  The Fair is a chance for the local community to get together and find out more about what is happening right here in our area and is brought to you thanks to sponsorship by Kilostate Estate Agents and Fusion Hair and Beauty.  Many other local businesses are also supporting the fair by providing quality raffle prizes.  Come along to the fair to browse the stalls, try your luck in our raffle, watch performances, demonstrations and more!  If you would like to get involved in the fair there is still time.  Maybe your business or organisation would like to run a stall or give a performance?  Please get in touch: contact@peopleforportlandroad.org.uk

Supporting Nithusha Store

People for Portland Road condemns the racist arson attack on Nithusha Store at 355 Portland Road and we would like to take this opportunity to wish the proprietor a speedy recovery from injuries sustained during the fire.  Racism and racist violence have no place in our society and we encourage everyone to show their support as soon as they are back in business.
